Investigation of carotid Doppler ultrasound findings in coronary bypass candidate patients

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of significant carotid artery stenosis and its risk factors in a group of patients who were candidates for CABG.
Patients and Methods: Three hundred and one patients with critical coronary artery disease, who were candidate for CABG, were evaluating by internal carotid Doppler study. The relation between age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, lipid profile, left main coronary stenosis > 50%, coronary artery disease and carotid stenosis, was assessed.
Results: Significant carotid stenosis (&#8805 70%), was detected in 13 patients (4.3%). According to the meaningful relationship between significant carotid stenosis and low HDL serum level (<45 in females and <35 in males, p=0.020), hypertension (p=0.021), history of smoking (p=0.026) and left main coronary artery stenosis &#8805 50% (p=0.014), they were identified as risk factors valuable enough to guide for selective screening.
Conclusion: We conclude that with increasing the grade of carotid artery stenosis from mild to severe, the prevalence of risk factors respectively grows
